High Speed Upload Protocol To Start Uploading At High Speed

July 27, 2010

One of the lesser-known features of the iPhone 4 is support for HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) which allows the iPhone to send data at very high speed. Unfortunately, this feature hasn't quite lived up to the promise, until now. As previously reported on AppAdvice.com, there is a bug in the software for AT&T's Alcatel-Lucent equipment. This bug caused some users with HSUPA-compatible devices like the iPhone 4 to experience very low upload speeds and a poor Internet experience overall. Customers were seeing upload speeds below 384Kbps when they should see speeds up to 5,670Kbps. Luckily for AT&T, this combination of software and hardware is not very common, and it affected only about 2% of AT&T's customers. In fact, the iPhone 4 is the only AT&T smartphone that uses HSUPA. Another lucky coincidence for AT&T is that "Antennagate" quickly stole the spotlight, eclipsing all other iPhone 4 issues. The past few weeks have allowed time for Alcatel-Lucent to develop a fix for the issue, and according to a story on Yahoo.com, AT&T is now starting to roll out the fix. AT&T says they will be doing a phased roll-out of the update which will take 2-3 weeks to complete. Did you experience the HSUPA bug? Are you excited about the upcoming fix? Let us know in the comments.
