Make Your iPhone Or iPod Touch A True Rugged Handheld GPS

July 1, 2010

Late last year Magellan released a Premium Car Kit to go along with their turn-by-turn iPhone app, and yesterday the company announced another hardware accessory to compliment your iPhone or iPod touch. The ToughCase is a rugged and waterproof solution that allows you to take your iDevice from your car to the trail or industrial workplace. Adding features like shock protection, water resistance, extended battery, and it's own highly sensitive GPS chipset, it should prove to be a worthy option for the down and dirty crowd.
“The ToughCase is the ideal solution for all outdoor users. From kayakers to golfers, mountain bikers to construction workers, it provides a level of protection and performance previously unavailable in other cases,” said Justin Doucette, Director of Product Marketing for Magellan GPS. “The ToughCase protects against harmful elements such as dust, rain, mud, water and snow.”
What does the ToughCase include? A rugged and waterproof enclosure that meets IPX-7 standards, giving it the ability to be submerged as deep as 1 meter (3 feet) for up to 30 minutes. A built-in 1,840mAh battery, allowing up to two times the operating time for your iDevice. The SiRFstar III GPS chipset gets you pinpointed as near as 3 meters (10 feet) in accuracy. The ToughCase is compatible with the second and third generation iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and goes hand-in-hand with the Magellan RoadMate 2010 apps. ToughCase will be available worldwide direct from Magellan and the Apple Store at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $199.99. One drawback is that, like the car kit, this doesn't support the iPhone 4. Who's willing to give up two Benjamins for this feature set?
