Jackpot Slots: The Coolest "Appcessory" Ever?

July 18, 2010

No friends, we're not joking. New Potato, a North Carolina-based company, has just released Jackpot Slots: a syncing, charging dock that comes complete with a one-armed bandit style lever attached to the side of it. After purchasing the dock, users simply download the company's free app, and then embark upon playing a classic game of Jackpot Slots - using their dock's lever to spin the reels. New Potato has dubbed this kind of product as an "appcessory", which obviously derives from the combination of "app", and "accessory". Inspiration for the idea has grown from Apple's hardware interface concept, which was introduced in 2009 and allows for the development of apps specifically catered towards third-party hardware. Earlier "appcessories" developed by New Potato includes FLPR, a device which turns your iPhone into a universal remote. Retailed at $79.99, it looks very cool indeed - but not as fun as Jackpot Slots, the dock for which can be bought for a pretty reasonable $39.99.

At the end of this day, this "appcessory" is really more of a toy than anything else - which you've probably already figured our for yourselves. However, it is nice to see a company making use of Apple's hardware interface concept, and hopefully a few others may follow suit and start developing their own "appcessories" soon. In the meantime, let us know if you've tried out Jackpot Slots in the comments box below! And if you've got any ideas for your dream "appcessory", be sure to post them, too. Thanks go to Cult of Mac for spotting Jackpot Slots.
