Forget Autobots and Decepticons - transforming has just got a whole lot more interesting. According to a recent report by Engadget, a device in China has the ability to turn your iPod touch into a calling, texting iPhone.
From what we've heard, the case-like product is called the Apple Peel 520. It uses an Infineon baseband chip to grant your iPod touch the power of voice calling and SMS texting. It's guessed that a jailbroken iPod touch is required to install the necessary apps on your device.
If you're still shaking your head in disbelief, take a look at this demo video. Crazy, right? I can't believe somebody's managed to achieve this, let alone the fact that the Apple Peel 520 is going to be retailed. Though no official price has been set yet, it's reported that the device will set customers back between ¥300 and ¥500 ($44 and $74 respectively).
However, I think it's fair to say that the Apple Peel 520 will be worth it - if it delivers. Aside from granting iPod touches the ability to call and text, the Peel also acts as a mophie Juicepack-style 800mAh battery which can provide users with 4.5 hours of call time. Yet, as Engadget notes, the Peel's lack of an official website has left many doubting its integrity. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the product's release brings.
