You Can’t Always Get What You Want by Sam Cutler is the narrative of Sam Cutler, former tour manager for the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead back in the late '60s and early '70s. Cutler played pivotal roles in some of music's most notable historic moments, but most will likely recall the horrifying moments of the Altamont Speedway Free Festival. The concert was a free tribute by headlining band Rolling Stones to rock and roll fans. The climatic news of the event wasn't the excitement of rock music but rather the unfortunate turn of serious violence amongst some spectators, where a young man named Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by a Hells Angel in front of the stage. As Sam Cutler was the tour manager, he was the one to receive the backlash of the terrifying actions that unfolded that day. Not only does Cutler look to set the record straight using facts from his personal direct account of the event, but also takes readers into other extremely interesting moments he has experienced.
The app includes the complete book, complete audiobook voiced by Sam Cutler, two 40-minute interviews, numerous photos, and nearly half-a-dozen video clips of the infamous concert and surrounding events. The audio book follows along in sync, highlighting what's being spoken by paragraph. Since its broken down into paragraphs, I found the audiobook extremely easy to control and navigate. Just tap on any paragraph to begin the audiobook from that point on. There are controls for play, pause, previous chapter, next chapter, add bookmark, and view bookmarks. The settings allow you to adjust the book font size and type, enable or disable the audiobook, and even turn night reading mode on or off.
I'm not a huge fan of memoirs or even the Rolling Stones, but I can't help but be amazed at how well polished this collection of recounts has been assembled. Whether you have any knowledge of the Altamont concert or the Rolling Stones, you'll still likely find this to be an intriguing read and first-hand look into some very interesting moments in history.
