Plex may be the first good reason to jailbreak your new Apple TV. Plex is a media server that runs on your Mac. Plex also has an iOS app that allows you to stream your content from your Mac to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. The app also includes a remote for your Mac.
The desktop app also includes access to video from MLB at Bat, Hulu, Netflix, PBS, NBC, CNN, and a variety of other sources. Currently those extra add-ons are limited to the Mac.
A new beta plugin is now available for Apple TV owners. The plugin allows you to stream video from your Mac to your Apple TV. Even though Plex supports music, this plugin does not yet allow it. It is still a beta, so keep that in mind when using it.
The instructions for installation are found on the Plex forums here. ModMyi provides a great guide on how to jailbreak your Apple TV, it can be found here.
Plex is a great alternative to iTunes. Now that there is a version for the Apple TV it may be time for you to consider it as your new iTunes replacement.
