iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Available Now!

November 23, 2010
Great news, jailbreak fans: the iPhone Dev-Team has just announced the release of redsn0w version 0.9.6b4. This new update to the popular jailbreak tool brings support for Apple's recently released iOS 4.2.1 software update. However, that's not all. As the Dev-Team notes on its blog, some iPhone 3GS owners, along with all iPhone 3G and non-MC iPod touch 2G owners will be pleased to hear that their iDevice is "just as jailbreakable as ever." These lucky iDevice owners can enjoy an untethered jailbreak, thanks to the Dev-Team's original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n. For the owners of more recent iDevices, such as the iPad or iPhone 4, a jailbreak is still achievable, however, it is a tethered jailbreak. Here's what the Dev-Team has to say regarding tethered jailbreaks:
A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state. @comex is working hard on a method that may untether the 4.2.1 jailbreak, but it will require you to have your 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to use it. No word on how much more effort it will take though (please don’t bug @comex about it!).
As you can see, an untethered jailbreak solution for iPad and iPhone 4 users is coming. But, until then, you guys will have to make do with the currently offered tethered jailbreak solution, via redsn0w. Furthermore, the Dev-Team had a message for ultrasn0w unlockers:
ultrasn0w unlock: After redsn0w is officially released with the new Cydia and kernel patches, we’ll be able to assess the unlock situation. It’s already looking very promising though, so expect the unlock for the 3G and 3GS to be coming this week. The i4 unlock is taking more effort though, and no further concrete info is available about that yet.
Overall, I think things look pretty good at the moment. While an untethered jailbreak solution isn't available for all, I have every faith that soon, @comex will have figured out how to untether the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. You can keep up to date with his progress via Twitter, at @comex. The latest version of redsn0w, which supports iOS 4.2.1, is available now. The download links for Mac OS X and Windows can be found over at the iPhone Dev-Team's blog. As always, jailbreak at your own risk!
