Rumor: Free MobileMe Service For Some iOS Users?

November 20, 2010
We've been hoping for a free MobileMe service for a while. Now, according to a recent post by MacRumors, this may soon be a reality following an interesting discovery in the GM build of iOS 4.2.1. As you can see in the below screenshot, a "free MobileMe service" is referred to in a new private framework within the seed, known as AppleAccounts.framework.

Furthermore, in a different part of the iOS, another error message suggests that users might have access to all of MobileMe's services, except MobileMe Mail. It reads:
This Apple ID cannot be used for MobileMe Mail, but you can use it for other MobileMe services.
To me, this sounds like a nice compromise. In reality, there's only one MobileMe service that I really want, and that feature is Find My iPhone. With an official universal application already available in the App Store, it would certainly be great if Apple made Find My iPhone a free service. I guess we'll just have to wait for iOS 4.2's release to find out. After several delays, many are expecting the software update to be available next week. We'll be reporting as soon as iOS 4.2 goes live, so be sure to check back for regular updates. Alternatively, if Twitter is more your thing, follow us there @AppAdvice.
