Gyroscope Gives Mobile Safari Augmented Reality Capabilities

December 28, 2010
Occipital, the development company behind 360 Panorama, has discovered a pretty interesting mobile Safari feature. The gyroscope, which is included in the iPhone 4 and iPod touch (4G), seems to allow for "augmented reality" capabilities. The 360 Panorama app uses the gyroscope in the iPhone 4 and iPod touch (4G) to create panoramic images. What's more, users can upload their creations online. Images can be viewed "in the round," so to speak, which is nice. However, Occipital recently discovered that when viewing 360 Panorama creations in mobile Safari, the iPhone and iPod's gyroscope can come into play. As you can see in the above image, Safari can detect the gyroscope. Following this discovery, Occipital activated "gryo-enabled panorama viewing," which is now "live for every panorama uploaded so far" using 360 Panorama.
If you have the latest iPhone OS (4.2+) and an iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4th gen, check out the new gyro-enabled panorama viewing we just launched!
