Sega Continues The Nostalgia Parade With The Release Of Altered Beast And Sonic Spinball
December 17, 2010
Sega continues to port their hit classic titles from the Mega Drive / Genesis to the iPhone and iPod touch. The latest releases include the platformer Altered Beast and the arcade enjoyment of Sonic Spinball.
Altered Beast is the 1988 arcade title where you play as a resurrected centurion, summoned by Zeus, who's task is to rescue his daughter Athena from the demon Neff. Your character has been granted the power to shape-shift into a number of different powerful beasts to battle demonic enemies. Sega did make one addition to the original game, you can team up with a friend using Bluetooth to play in a co-op mode.
Sonic Spinball has four levels and three bonus stages. Your mission is still to collect all of the Chaos Emeralds and defeat Dr. Robotnik, but you'll be doing it using Sonic's speed-ball ability. Bounce your way around the level to collect rings, emeralds, defeat enemies, and more. The D-pad controls Sonic's movement in the air, while the buttons control the pinball machine "flippers."
As with all of the other Sega ports to iOS, the games retain the original quality graphics and sound, gameplay elements, and the controls are an overlaid and semi-transparent virtual D-pad and buttons.
Altered Beast and Sonic Spinball are compatible with iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later, and both fitted with the typical Sega to iOS port price tag of $2.99.
