New Year's Eve, There Is Indeed An App For That

December 31, 2010
The end of a decade is upon us and, sure enough, "there's an app for that." Countdown Entertainment brings you the Times Square Official New Year’s Eve Ball App for ringing in 2011. The app really does seem to offer a number of useful features for those attending the New York event, or for those just staying cozy at home. Obviously, the first thing to appear before your eyes is a countdown timer winding down to expire once that clock hits 12:00A.M. January 1st, 2011. Tap on the gear in the top-right to adjust your timezone and default countdown image. Your social-networking accounts can also be managed here, if you so desire to utilize them. Tapping on the location pin button in the top-left offers the chance to quickly inform your Twitter, Facebook, or Foursquare followers what you'll be doing and where you'll be spending New Year's Eve. Next up, we have the Times Square Livestream. As of now, this section isn't going to do you a ton of good. You can view a couple videos on the history of the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration and about the app. Don't get freaked out if you get an error for the live stream, it isn't suppose to begin until 5:55 PM EST. The next area is quite interesting, I think, as it provides the ability to upload photos. Why would someone want to do this, you might ask. Apparently, the app's big sponsor, Toshiba, is giving users a chance to have their photos possibly appear on the Toshiba display in Times Square. Photos must be uploaded by 6:45 PM EST, and will be picked based on the amount of popular votes that friends, family, and strangers place for them. Moving onto the Kiss section, this is where you can share custom New Year's Eve-themed digital postcards via Twitter, Facebook, or email. A nice gesture to wish someone a Happy New Year or even invite them to your "Goodbye 2010" bash. Take a long trip through the Info portion for some useful resources, anything from locations of key event points-of-interest to news and current New York weather conditions. Not only does this section contain information for those attending the celebration, but curious individuals can check out the New Year's Eve celebration and New Year's Eve Ball history and fact sheets. If you are looking to help those who aren't sporting an iOS or Android device -- how dare they not have an iPhone or iPod touch! -- keep up with the action, I noticed a link to some New Year's Eve widgets for your website in the News feed. I realize that some of you have already made it into 2011, but we'd like to give a big thanks and Happy New Year to all of our readers just the same. Times Square Official New Year’s Eve Ball App - 2011 is compatible with iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later. Grab your copy in the App Store now at no cost. [gallery link="file"]
