DropVox: Share Voice Memos To Your Dropbox Account Within Minutes

February 1, 2011
Are you one of those to use the Voice Memos app for more than just an occasional reminder to yourself? If you use it for recording lectures, meetings, interviews, and anything else that you'd like to instantly share or listen to using another device, then it's time to check out DropVox. DropVox is a very simple but extremely handy voice memo application with Dropbox support. Like I said, it's really simple. Launch the app, tap the big record button, record your audio, stop recording, and let DropVox immediately upload the file to your Dropbox account. Within settings, you just need to login to Dropbox and choose the desired folder for DropVox to use. Instructors can have lectures available for downloading minutes after class, students can record the lecture themselves and have it available to their computers and other devices, businessmen can have a meeting or important message shared quickly to co-workers, and a number of endless possibilities. Despite the app only being available for the last few days, there seem to be at least a couple of customers already using it frequently enough to give some useful feedback through the iTunes' rating system. The concept if Dropvox is nice. Everything works good so far but I'll be updating this review after I record a course lecture. Not sure if it an handle a 50 min upload. If it can, I'll be in heaven. UPDATE it just uploaded my 50min lecture with no problem. I had doubts, but 25 min later it showed up in my Dropbox at only 9.2MB. Amazing! I also recorded a few other things while it was processing.

Does just what it says, with a beautiful, simple interface. Handles being offline pretty well -- seems to hold the recording then upload next time it's launched. Nice. One criticism: files are names with a seemingly random series of numbers. How about naming with the date and time of the recording? Like "2011-01-31-1400.mp4" (where 1400 is 2 pm in 24-hour time).
DropVox is designed for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.0.2 or later, and available for purchase in the App Store for a limited time sale price of just $.99.
