Halfbrick Studios Celebrates Fruit Ninja Downloads, Plants An Orchard

February 19, 2011
The popular fruit slicing iOS game, Fruit Ninja, has been downloaded over six million times in just 10 months. To celebrate this achievement, the app's developer (Halfbrick Studios) is in the process of planting a "fully functioning orchard" in a low income Native American community. Halfbrick has teamed up with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, an organization that plants orchards all over the globe. Collectively, players of the iOS app have destroyed more than 150 billion pieces of virtual fruit in the game - and this is something Luke Muscat, lead designer of Fruit Ninja, feels bad about. In Halfbrick's press release, he said:
It’s important for players to know that wasting fruit won’t result in sweet high scores, awesome combos and frenzy moves to show off to their friends. Sensei is a Fruit Ninja master, and will always teach you the ways of virtual fruit destruction – but there won’t be any more fruit to slice if we don’t plant trees!
For this reason, Halfbrick has decided to plant its very own orchard, which will provide "fresh, healthy sustenance but also income for the long term benefit of the tribe." Personally, I think this is a really nice gesture. If you want to find out more about the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, visit their website. And, here's the relevant webpage from Halfbrick's blog.
