Apple Tells Carriers: No NFC Capable iPhone 5

March 14, 2011
Sources at several UK carriers claim that Apple will not announce a Near Field Communication (NFC) capable iPhone 5 this June, due to the "lack of a clear standard across the industry." Apparently, Apple will instead debut NFC technology in the sixth generation iPhone. With an NFC capable iPhone, Apple fans would be able to use their handset at "wave and pay" points. After hiring an NFC expert back in August, Apple gave users a sneak peak at its "E-Wallet" app icon in a patent that was revealed in February. This led most of us to believe that Apple was planning on launching an NFC capable iPhone this June. However, if this report - which comes from UK newspaper, the Independent - is anything to go by, we're not going to be able to pay via an iPhone until next year. This could mean the iPhone 5 isn't going to be as big a deal as we originally thought. If you have an opinion, feel free to post it in the comments.
