AT&T Warns MyWi Users: You Need An Additional Plan To Tether

March 18, 2011
AT&T has started sending SMS messages and e-mails to users running MyWi on their iPhone, informing them that a subscription plan is required for Internet tethering. MyWi allows users to tether without having to take out an additional plan, and is currently available to download via the Cydia Store. As you can see in the above screenshot, the SMS message reads:
AT&T Free Msg: Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan? Pls call 888-860-6789 for details or visit att.com/dataplans.
However, the e-mail AT&T is sending out adopts a more serious tone. As you can see below, the e-mail informs MyWi users that they will be automatically enrolled in the DataPro 4GB plan after March 27, 2011, if the tethering does not stop before then. This means that by March 27, all AT&T customers who tether are going to be paying for it, regardless of which method they use. Here's the appropriate section from the e-mail:
If we don’t hear from you, we’ll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after March 27, 2011. The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.
If you're an AT&T customer who uses MyWi, let us know if you've received the above SMS and e-mail in the comments. [via ModMyi]
