Burn The Rope Adds "Puzzle Of The Day": A Game Mode To Play User Created Levels
April 8, 2011
Yesterday's update of Big Blue Bubble's Burn the Rope added an interesting functionality to the list of features. The new "Puzzle of the Day" feature looks to bring new content through daily changing puzzles to accompany those included in the regular game.
Puzzle of the Day is a small group of user submitted puzzles that are chosen by the developer to be created and included in the new section. The Puzzle of the Day area is now available as an option after tapping Play in the main menu. Choose any one of the puzzles and play it as usual, trying to burn away as much of the rope as possible. Once completed, you can rate the level, replay it, or go back to the list.
Big Blue Bubble's approach to this ability is a bit head-scratching, There's no built-in level (puzzle) creator / editor or any kind of development system. As it stands, users submit images depicting what they want the level to look like and the dev is the one who chooses and actually constructs them based on the drawing. It's a bit clumsy sounding, however, it appears that it works.
The game's official site lists the instructions, requirements, and some examples for those interested. Big Blue Bubble is even gifting t-shirts to those who are fortunate to have their design(s) chosen -- not a terrible incentive.
• Design a level using any of the insects and mechanics from the original game. These include ants, colored rope, firebug, electric bug, spiders and water bugs.
• The submission picture can be JPG, PNG or BMP format but must be less than 2 MB in size.
• Puzzles can be presented in any way you choose but keep in mind that the more legible they are the more likely we will choose them (see samples below).
• We will be judging them based on the following criteria.
-- Originality
-- Visual appeal of the design
-- How fun the level is to play!
• You may submit as many puzzles as you wish!
• Any copyrighted material like company logos and cartoon characters will not be eligible for entry.
• If your puzzle is chosen you will notify you ahead of time so you can let all your friends know. You will also receive a free T-Shirt!
• You must be a resident of the United States to participate in the contest. We will be including more countries in the future.
• When your puzzle is ready to submit upload the file, enter your name and e-mail address and then click the submit button.

Seems like a good attempt to get their fans involved, although, I hope it doesn't mean they'll be taking a break from creating their own content for the actual game puzzles. It shall be interesting to see how it all turns out. What are your thoughts on this idea?
Burn the Rope is designed for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later, and available in the App Store for $1.99.
