Find Me On MeMap

April 12, 2011

MeMap (Free) by Matt Farnell is a location app that displays where your friends are. It creates interactive maps pinpointing the location of your friends by utilizing the Facebook check-in system. Unlike other location apps, MeMap allows for a level of privacy between users, giving them the ability to safeguard their information. The app uses the same engine as the default Map App, making it easier for iDevice users to navigate. On each map, users can view where their friends last checked in or their current location, depending on their privacy settings.

The privacy settings are very advanced. By selecting a “social mood,” users choose to be online or offline. Online shares your current location whereas offline only shows locations if you check-in. The app allows users to choose whom they share their information with. It can be shared with everyone, certain people, or blocked from others. The app also includes a “panic button,” which allows users to purge all their information from the app. Combined, these features make MeMap the most private location app I have seen thus far.

MeMap comes with lots of additional features. By clicking on a person on the map you can ping them, open their Facebook page, call them (if they are in your contacts), and find directions to their location. It includes two newsfeeds, Checkins and Statuses, both linked to Facebook. Users can also create special friend lists for MeMap, aside from basic Facebook friend list. I find this useful so you can just view those people who you are interested on following.

Overall, MeMap is a very well designed app. It is useful and interesting for those who enjoy following their friends. I especially like that it allows users to keep their information private, which is very important today. I don’t like some of the additional features. They detract from the simplicity of the app and make it feel cluttered.
