Best Of... (Free) by Village Voice, LLC is an app that will give you advice on some of the most highly rated establishments in the city where you are living or visiting. Best Of… will help you locate the best chili, bowling alley, dive bar, sporting goods store, beach and even a bathroom.

These categories are only the beginning. In Minneapolis, the list is 170 categories long. This is mainly intended as a travel app, but could be used in your hometown as well. The app also provides a fairly lengthy review for each place, so you can learn more about the establishment. In the food category, some of the reviews even suggest menu items to try. Best Of… even allows you to check in on Facebook, by posting the place you visited on your wall, directly from the app.

However, there are a couple of reasons why I think this app falls short. As I was browsing in Minneapolis, it appears to only give one option in each category. This can be somewhat limiting. It does have an option to search by neighborhood, however this only brings up one or two of the categories, depending on what is nearby. Minneapolis is a large city and if the “best breakfast” is on the other side of town, it could be a 35 mile drive for your morning “cup of joe.” It would be nice to set a specific radius (in miles) from a zip code or neighborhood to see more options for each area of the city.

Another shortcoming is that several of the suggestions were quite expensive, especially in the food categories. It would be good to have a rating system that allows you to sort by price, especially for those who are budget conscious and are traveling with families. Currently, the selection of cities is limited, but that will hopefully grow over time.

As of now this app is free, and maybe I am being a bit too critical. If you are a person who is indecisive, or dislikes having to make a decision, this app is perfect. You are given one place to choose from. I am hoping down the road Best Of... will add more features, because the concept is fantastic. I would even be willing to pay a dollar or two for a full-featured app that has more options in each category and details more locations around the city.

If you've tried Best Of... please tell us what you think of it.
