Silent Film Director Lets You Create Retro Movies - Plus, Win A Copy!
April 6, 2011
Silent Film Director is a new app, but it is also the pro/updated version of Vintage Video Maker. So, if you already had Vintage Video Maker (which previously went for $1.99), you’ll get the new Silent Film Director as a free upgrade. If you did not have Vintage Video Maker, but are interested, you can buy the new Silent Film Director instead (since Vintage Video Maker no longer exists by that name) for $.99. If you like it, and want more tools and features, you can upgrade in-app for another $.99.
Silent Film Director, the Standard Mode (this part was previously known as Vintage Video Maker, and our link below may still say Vintage Video Maker) allows you to create retro-style movies with your iPhone or iPod touch. Create silent films with a variety of video effects, customize video speed and quality, add soundtracks, record or upload from sharing folders, and share your results via popular social networks. See our detailed review here.
So what’s in the Pro Mode (in-app upgrade) of Silent Film Director? This has iMovie-like features, such as the ability to trim video, create and add separate title cards, and put multiple film clips and photos into each project.
Open up Silent Film Director and choose Standard Mode or Pro Mode. Or, tap Show Time! to view videos created by other users. The latter option makes it kind of like an Instagram for retro video!
So, if you tap Pro Mode, you’ll be led to a Movie Projects screen. Any movies you’ve created will be here. Tap the “+” icon to start a new project. Give the project a name when prompted and tap “Done”. First you’ll want to choose the effect: Black & White, 20’s Movie, 60’s Home Video, Sepia, Sepia Vintage, 70’s Home Video, or None. Next, pick your quality: Low (192x144), Normal (480x360), High (640x480), or HD (1280x720). Then pick your soundtrack: Mute, Piano 1, Piano 2, and Movie Projector are included, but you can download more soundtracks for free on the app's website, silentfilmdirector.com. You could also import soundtracks from your Library or Shared Folder. Next, choose your time scale - you have a half dozen options for slowing down or speeding up your film.
Go back up to the top and choose “Timeline”. Here is where you create your movie. Tap the “+” to Load Video, Take Video, Load Image, Take Photo, create a Title Card, or Transition. Once you have completed your film, go back and tap Render. Tap “Share” to save your video, send it to YouTube, Facebook, email, or Submit to Contest.
I have linked a couple of my very short videos (based on the same clip) here and here, so you can get an idea of what you can do. You can also visit the app's YouTube gallery here.
Want to win a copy of Silent Film Director? We have teamed with the developer to offer three copies to give away. Simply leave a comment below by April 7 at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Good luck!
