360 Panorama Gets An Amazing New Update
May 17, 2011
Popular panoramic photo app 360 Panorama from Occipital (creators of RedLaser) has just gotten a major update. Rebuilt from the ground up, the app is easier to use and produces cleaner 360 degree panoramic photos in seconds. Plus, there is a whole new sharing aspect to explore.
Unlike some panorama apps that require stitching, 360 Panorama allows you to simply pan around in a complete circle to capture the world around you. Check out our original description of the app here.
Personally I found the results with the original iteration of this app a bit sloppy-looking, but the newest update changes all that. With a totally new icon, user interface, and experience, creating panoramas is easier and simply better than ever.
I invite you all into my living room/home office. You can see the panorama flattened out, 360 View (rectangle) style here in this article, above. You can also see it Stereographic (circle) style in my gallery below.
In the developer’s own words:
"In fact, it's actually TWO releases. We've been working on this nonstop since December, and it's by far our biggest iOS/Web release in the history of our company.
1) 360 Pano 4.0 w/ smart self-healing panoramas. More info below.
(and that's just the coolest feature -- we also have tons of other other new stuff... user accounts, FB integration, wicked fast save (>2x faster), redesigned UI)
2) 360VERSE, a searchable destination site to explore the world of panoramas captured by 360 users. 360VERSE is unique in its ability to let you virtually tour the world for both places and events -- allowing you to search for things such as "New York, Now" to get a recent feed, or "Australia, Last month" to search for a particular event. It uses the same immersive viewer technology that 360 panorama sharing links use.
3) 360.io short URLs. Starting with version 4.0, we have a brand new short URL for panoramas -- 360.io! It's short, simple, and communicates the 360-degree nature of the panoramas in one simple URL which is perfect for sharing on Twitter of Facebook.
More details:
360 Panorama 4.0 is launching at 8:30 AM PST Tuesday morning. We will have a $0.99 sale (usually $1.99). It's far slicker than its predecessor and packs a much improved social side. But the most incredible aspect is that, for the first time ever, captured panoramas are dynamically enhanced by our computer vision servers. So your images are no longer static and frozen in time. Just like fine wine, your panorama will actually get better over time as our servers learn to do a better job of synthesizing it.
We're also launching the 360VERSE -- our all new community-powered site that allows you to experience recent events around the world via the 360 views being captured by our users. Search for "New York City tonight" after Obama's speech last week and you'd get this. Or search for "2011 Academy Awards" and you'd get this and this (captured by @danabrunetti, the producer of The Social Network)."
If you’ve ever thought you might want to capture 360 degree panoramic photos, I recommend you pick up this app while it’s on sale for just $.99!
