Meporter: Local News By The People, For The People

May 26, 2011
News spreads pretty quickly across the social networks, but what if there was a more news-like service without the limitations? Meporter is a new app and service that focuses on turning the news reporter into a news meporter, where sharing of breaking events is quick and simple. In the past, people would contact TV network tip lines when events occur that would be breaking news. Those with smartphones typically mash out a tweet or two nowadays and then the attention gets picked up by reporters, or once again via tipsters. Meporter cuts out the middle-man or woman and makes you the reporter. From something as intense as a traffic accident or a building fire to as small as the neighbors putting up a massive backyard deck or a block invited BBQ, it's up to you what news gets out there. Snap a photo or a short video clip, add a title, and fill in a tiny caption or write-up a full multipage description and analysis. When you're ready to go, post it to Meporter.com, plus Facebook and Twitter. Meporter is meant to be a local news source, however, people can view posts from other areas, if desired. Users are able to leave comments to your news releases, chime in as eyewitnesses and even add further or new details if they're in the area. The more stories you post the more credit you get, plus the chance at rewards and prizes.
Meporter has teamed up with several events and publications, including Forbes Magazine, Vans Warped Tour, Rockstar Mayhem Festival, and Willie Nelson's Country Throwdown Tour. Each event and publication will have select Meporter Press Passes (and prizes when available) for Meporters once they have completed certain criteria. Meporter is also launching a massive social media contest called the "Million Man Launch" to gain awareness about the app
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and start spreading that big news in a big way. If you're a truly dedicated news junkie, try quickly spicing up videos with an app like iMovie for iPhone 4, 4G iPod touch, and iPad 2. Meporter is designed for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.0 or later, and available in the App Store as a free download.
