If you own a Windows PC, we have some good news: A recently released piece of software (developed by Thomas Pleasance) now allows for a bit of cosy interaction between Microsoft computers and Apple iOS devices. Namely, Pleasance's software - AirPlay for Windows Media Center - allows users to stream content from an iOS device, to a Windows PC.
We're not going to pretend that this has never been done before (because it has). Importantly, this kind of thing has never been done well, and working well - despite its shortcomings - is something AirPlay for Windows Media Center appears to do. While there are a few limitations (the service doesn't yet support music - only pictures and video), the free piece of software looks incredibly impressive - especially considering it's only in its first beta. In time, we're sure support for music will be added, and that this impressive AirPlay client will grow into a truly remarkable piece of software.
In order to take advantage of AirPlay for Windows Media Center, simply download the free client along with Apple's Bonjour service. Once everything has been installed, you should be good to go. Remember, for now it's pictures and video only, but that should be enough to keep you going until Pleasance adds streaming capabilities for music, too.
For more information, be sure to visit Thomas Pleasance's website, where you can find download links and more information on AirPlay for Windows Media Center (along with a small community of frequent commenters, ready to diagnose any problems you might encounter). Furthermore, you might also be interested in checking out The Digital Lifestyle's review of the software, too.
Enjoy, and if you're impressed with AirPlay for Windows Media Center, let us know in the comments.
