Seagate has just announced the GoFlex Satellite portable HDD - a battery powered portable hard drive, which can stream content to iOS devices via a GoFlex Media app (that ships with the device).
The GoFlex Satellite allows users to expand the hard drive of their Wi-Fi enabled mobile device by 500 gigabytes. While the portable HDD can theoretically work with any such device, as Engadget notes (in its review), the GoFlex Satellite works best with our much loved iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches.
This is because Seagate has also developed an iOS app, via which users can quickly and easily stream content from their portable HDD, to their iOS device. As Seagate notes in its press release (which hit the Web today), the GoFlex Satellite is specifically catered towards the ever expanding iPad market:
"With the GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage, we wished to create an elegant solution that provides real value to the multitude of iPad users out there by delivering a seamless connection to local storage. No longer will a consumer feel as though it is a compromise to purchase a lower capacity tablet or iPad. With GoFlex Satellite, people will be able to carry their entire media library with them without the need for wires or the web at a fraction of the cost of adding 3G or purchasing the 64GB iPad."Once you've loaded the portable HDD with pictures, music and video (via USB), you can stream content to an iOS device easily. Simply press an "ON" button (located on the drive itself), and within half a minute the drive should be ready to connect to your iOS device (via the GoFlex Media app). And the best news? Seagate's GoFlex Satellite will be available to purchase for a "suggested retail price" of $199.99. You can check out the product page here, and be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.
