Ten One's Tactile Fling Joysticks Now Available In Apple Stores Across America

May 22, 2011
Hot on the heels of iOS' professed gaming dominance comes another Apple retail product pickup. With video games the theme, Ten One Design's Fling iPad joystick is now being offered in Apple stores across the United States. Chris Oldroyd at TiPb explains the accessory's construction in his blog post:
The Fling joystick...is a conductive joystick nub surrounded by an inner and outer plastic spiral; these allow the joystick to move within the rings which creates the feel of an analog stick. The Fling attaches to the iPad screen via the age old method of two tiny suction cups and allows you to replace the virtual joystick used in many iOS games.
Admittedly, I have little use for a product like this; but, also admittedly, the thing really appears to be a smartly-designed, well-functioning solution for iPad gamers desperate for finer control of both single and dual virtual thumbsticks. The suction mounts are offset and off-screen, and Fling's clear plastic construction actually allows you to see most of the graphical elements displayed directly beneath. While they're not yet available on Apple's online store, you're still able to purchase the clever little contraptions at Ten One's website. Three stem-flared color options are available: "Ice" (grey), "Ninja" (black), and "Ultraviolet" (regular violet); and Fling retails for $19.95 for a single unit or $29.95 for a pair. A microfiber pouch is included. Update: As reader Hakushox points out below, Fling may not work with your screen protector! It's your best bet to use the thumbstick(s) on a bare iPad screen.
