Apple Snubs Carriers, Launches iMessages Without Informing Anyone

Yesterday, Apple unveiled a new feature of the iOS - iMessages. This handy feature allows Apple fans to send free instant messages to one another, from within the Messages app, for free. Interestingly, today we're hearing that Apple launched this feature without informing carriers.
Why is this interesting? Well, iMessages is a major threat to carriers, simply because it allows iPhone users to message one another without an SMS plan. If you've got enough iPhone (or iPad) owning friends running iOS 5, iMessages is a way Apple fans can ditch their messaging plan and save some cash - something John Gruber (of Daring Fireball) plans to do.
Will you? Let us know in the comments.
