Mac OS X Lion Becomes OS X Lion, Paving A New Path For The Personal Computer
June 7, 2011
Amidst all of the rumors and a number of times during today's keynote, Apple has admitted that their advancements in iOS have ignited evolutionary plans for future version of the Mac OS. And as it seems, iOS isn't just influencing features but also naming.
First announced and previewed last October during the "Back To The Mac" special event, Mac OS X Lion has been featured in at least a few ways on Apple.com. Even back then, Apple touted this next generation of the Mac OS to be a much closer sibling to its younger brother, iOS.
The Mac OS will gain more advanced multi-touch, better full screen app and multitasking navigation support, hiding scrollbars, and more. In a bit of a surprising move, apple has also dropped the Mac reference from the desktop and laptop OS name to become simply OS X Lion. Such a move makes it undoubtedly certain where Macs, and probably most personal computers, are headed.
We're going to demote the PC and the Mac to be just another device. That's right, your Mac will serve no bigger role in your life than your iPhone or iPad, just a different one. In other words, Apple seems to be officially dubbing this the beginning of the next evolution in the life of the personal computer. Thus far, I find this path to be exciting and full of potential. However, with any evolution, there is no doubt of some struggles along the way. What are your thoughts about morphing your MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or even an iMac with Magic Trackpad into an iPad-like device?
