SpotMusic Does What It Says And Nothing More
SpotMusic ($1.99) by Fabio Ciotoli is an app to help you find the name of that amazing song you heard in a television commercial. The app currently contains over 2,500 commercials from multiple companies and businesses with more added every day.
You start with a list in which you can search for specific commercials. When you click on the company or business, it will list all the available appropriate songs in the app. It seems to me that most of these are older commercials, as I couldn't find any that were more recent than 2009. However, this could just be an oversight on my part as I didn't click on every single one to check.
Once you find the commercial you're looking for, you're brought to the screen that shows you the name of the artist and the song title. Near the bottom, there is a tab for notes as well as an option to play the song.
I had hoped this would play a snippet, like, for instance, iTunes does. Unfortunately, it routes you to a random YouTube video of the song. That's right, completely random performances of the songs.
I came to realize that this is not very intuitive. You may as well just use Shazam or SoundHound, in my opinion. Or if the commercial isn't currently playing, just Google it or look it up on YouTube. That is all the app does anyway -- it looks it up on YouTube for you.
With over 2500 commercials already in the database, and updates happening often, there may be some use for this down the line. However, it's very difficult for me to want to use this over other apps that essentially do the same thing. And, in most cases, they seem to do it better.
I suppose the app does what it sets out to accomplish, but it's not anything new or cutting edge that we can't already do with other apps. This is certainly not worth $1.99. I suggest the developer find a new niche and just let this one go for free.
