iPhone 4GS/5 Purported Picture Leak Surprises With Its Familiar Look

July 18, 2011
As we get closer to a new Apple hardware release every few months, we start getting supposedly "leaked" pictures from around the web. It's almost a tradition. Usually, these come from some remote place in Vietnam or China and some have shown to be surprisingly reliable in the past. For example, that's how we found out about the white iPhone 4, the Magic Trackpad and many more. Today the folks from the Chinese website Apple.pro (via 9to5mac), are showing off what they claim to be a prototype of the next iPhone, which they call the 4GS. As you'll notice, it looks very similar to the current iPhone 4. From what we can read and see, it features the same design, the same five megapixel camera and doesn't even seem to be thinner despite the rumors, though it's hard to tell.
Reportedly the next iPhone - running Apple's prototype OS
The fact that Apple's hasn't released a new iPhone for over a year now makes it really hard to believe that they would make the new model so similar. Also, while the prototype is clearly running Apple's testing OS (which we've seen in the past), it could after all just be an iPhone 4. On the other hand, Apple.Pro has had some very legit leaks in the past like: the latest iPod nano, drawings of the iPhone 4 and even the white iPhone 4. So what can we make of it? If this is legit, it could very well be the rumored "second" iPhone Apple will launch, to target the lower end of the smartphone market. Recently Apple has sold two iPhones, the new model being the high end one, with the older sticking around as the lower end. By repackaging the old/cheap model with some slight changes and calling it 4GS, Apple might still launch an iPhone 5, but have a new cheaper model that could sell better than if the device was simply the older version. Could it be that we're simply getting excited over an old iPhone 4 prototype. Which one is it? Tell us in the comments!
