Fans Of The Classic DOOM Can Now Play On Their iPad, Plus Graphics And Other Enhancements
August 4, 2011
You did indeed read the title correctly, DOOM Classic has been updated. Considering that it was a direct port from the personal computer version to iOS, there really isn't much one can expect id Software to add. However, after nearly two years, DOOM Classic v2.0 adds native support for Apple's tablet, a couple other requests, and another price drop.
Yep, the game now runs natively on the iPad and iPad 2. It's nice and welcomed, but that probably wasn't the make or break factor for most buyers. News in a related category, this update has Retina display resolution graphics. Again, it's still worth an applause for id to put aside resources to add these enhancements, although, it isn't groundbreaking for this game. Why? Because the point was for a nostalgic feel, therefore, the game retains the near two decades old graphics. And on that note, I feel it's time to move on.
The final change that id makes note of is a revamped menu system. As noted in our original review, the initial menu setup was a bit clunky. The new user interface seems to be a lot classier and quite easy to navigate, I think. Tap on the discs to reveal sub-options, such as buttons to begin a new game and resume within the play section.
I regret to inform you that the controls haven't been changed, nor is there a new configuration to speak about. This was the second gripe made in our review, and I do concur. I find all of the controls have a significant downside. I wouldn't mind the dual-joystick control if the fire weapon button wasn't in a completely different corner than the other controls.
Anyway, proceeding to what could be the true highlight of today's DOOM Classic update release: a price drop. During its 21 months in the App Store, the game's price tag has changed numerous times from the original $6.99 cost. While it has reached the amount twice before, DOOM Classic is back at $1.99.
DOOM Classic is a universal app compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running iOS 3.2 or later, and available in the App Store for $1.99.
