Prepare To Use Your Brawny Head To Keep Trollsville Safe In Bonkheads
Bonkheads HD ($2.99) by Around the Clock Games is an arcade game where a large earthquake has created a passage from the Earth’s surface all the way down to Trollsville.
It’s your job to make sure those strange earthly creatures like dogs, rats and snakes don’t make their way down to your home. Originally released in 1996, the game is an exact copy of the original, reproduced for iOS.
Each map is made up of an unchanging environment. Critters walk in from the top left and top right. If you touch them in any way, you die. You start off with just bulldogs but successive levels introduce additional and more challenging critters.
The only way to deal with these little guys is to knock them over by “bonking” the floor they are walking on with your head from underneath. You then jump up and walk into them to kick them off completely. If you don’t kick them off, they will rouse a few seconds later and continue walking around.
Once a critter is down, the others don’t walk through it but will instead turn around as though reflecting off of it. This is not true for the edges of the screen, however, where walking into the left edge brings you back out on the right side of the screen (similar to Pac-Man).
There is a box of TNT in the middle of the map which will allow you to stun everything when you’re becoming overwhelmed. Be careful though, it has only one use and anything already stunned will be wakened.
Every few levels you will have to fight a boss before moving on to the next environment.
Two player mode is available but not by linking devices. Two people play on one iDevice at the same time on a split screen in such a way that each of you must hold onto one half. The screen for each player becomes quite small but at least you get a friend’s help to keep Trollsville safe.
Although maps are static and scenery does not change while you’re playing, there are a lot of them. All 144 levels have sharp HD graphics. The game looks good and is a lot of fun to play.
Whether it’s a childhood favorite or a new experience, Bonkheads is sure to be a fine addition to your collection of games.
