Make Unlimited Free Calls To United States And Canada Numbers With MagicJack's New iOS App
September 30, 2011
When choosing service providers, consumers give more attention to companies who provide a worry-free unlimited plan. In the category of telephone service providers, at least for anyone not dedicated to the old-fashioned landline, Skype and Vonage are top choices for people who spend a lot of time conversing to long distance family and friends. However, magicJack is hoping to nudge those looking for a VoIP solution away from the competition with the new Free Calls with magicJack app.
So, how is this app any different? Along with allowing unlimited calls to any magicJack number, Free Calls with magicJack also includes unlimited calling to United States and Canada phone numbers maintained by other telecoms. Of course, there is a catch. The registration doesn't offer inbound calls, except from magicJack customers. It's tough to complain about such a limitation when things are absolutely free.
As with other VoIP clients, Free Calls with magicJack makes it possible to communicate with others through any iDevice, not just those with cellular connectivity. Free Calls with magicJack does work on Apple's iOS tablet, however, the app works through iPad Compatibility Mode.
I'm usually very skeptical about these "too good to be true" promotion deals. I did a few test calls in an attempt to discover hidden limitations, but everything worked as advertised. I was even surprised about the registration process lacking any kind of billing information input. We all know how companies normally provide a trial period, then automatically enroll the user into the full service if not cancelled within a certain time frame.
Am I going to proclaim this to be a perfect solution? No. Indeed, I did run into some brief frustrating moments in the process, although, I wouldn't call them deal breakers. For one, interrupting the registration process can lead to some issues with device activation. For me, part of this hassle was due to a huge delay in the confirmation email. It appeared almost instantly when using my Gmail address, but took hours when I had it sent to my MobileMe account. Another heads-up would be the password situation. Even though the app had a password setup section at one point, your account password ends up being the 5-digit device activation code.
The Free Calls with magicJack app is compatible with iPad (via Compatibility Mode), iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third generation iPod touch and newer running iOS 4.0 or later, and available in the App Store as a no-cost download.
