Run Circles Around An Impossible Foe In SpaceBoss
SpaceBoss Free (Free) by deadbug is an arcade shooter where you control a shuttle with access to various weapons and must assault a huge space boss many times your size. There are no levels to work through in getting to the boss.
The tutorial does a fine job of getting you comfortable with the game so I suggest you make use of it. The shuttle is controlled via two thumbsticks. The left stick is for movement, the right is for firing. You will need fuel to power your shuttle and credits to upgrade its weapons.
The boss is a huge ship with a plethora of weapons and weak points which you will need to destroy during the various phases of each fight. There are four bosses to choose from, each having slightly different features such as the ability to disappear.
As you advance, the fight becomes progressively harder with the bosses not only shooting back, but also sending out tiny death ships which move a lot more quickly and require some fancy flying on your part.
Destroying passing asteroids and some small guns on the boss will release small yellow fuel orbs which will rush toward you when you get close enough. If you don’t keep your fuel topped up you won’t be able to move. Larger asteroids and larger guns on the boss will release small green circles which give you credits.
As you acquire new weapons, you can equip them from your inventory by tapping on the large green circle on the right. From this same screen, you can also access upgrades for those weapons. Your weapons can be upgraded spending the credits you have collected.
The shuttle moves quickly and smoothly enough to avoid incoming fire. Some aircraft shooter games just feel slow, but the zippy action of SpaceBoss really feels like a small speedy craft that is able to run circles around a larger slower opponent.
With only four bosses, if this app had to be purchased, I would have downgraded it. But with what’s being offered in a free game it’s a lot of fun to play. If you enjoy arcade shooters, you’ll probably enjoy SpaceBoss.
