The FCC Knows About The Next iPhone, Soon We Will Too

September 2, 2011
Earlier this week, we alerted our readers to the rumored iPhone prototype with a model number of “N94.” Today, it looks like Apple has forwarded that number to the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). In doing so, the handset now has an FCC ID, according to MacRumors. The “N94” is rumored to be an iPhone 4S, a cheaper version of the existing model. Various rumors have suggested in recent months that Apple will announce a new iPhone 5 very soon, along with a cheaper model that will look a lot like the iPhone 4. Today’s news suggests these rumors are getting closer to becoming true. By assigning the handset an FCC ID, the U.S. government is essentially confirming the iPhone 4S’s existence. Says MacRumors:
According to the new file, the unreleased N94 iPhone has been assigned a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ID of BCG-E2430A. This compares to the BCG-E2380A identifier on the GSM iPhone 4 and the BCG-E2422A identifier on the CDMA iPhone 4. The device has yet to show up in the FCC's equipment authorization database, although those entries generally do not appear until the day the products are announced. Even then, Apple typically requests that some of the more sensitive documents such as photos of device internals be considered confidential and thus kept from public view for a period of time.
We’ll continue keeping you updated on new iPhone 5 and/or iPhone 4S rumors as they become available. Our best bet is that rumors will die down over the U.S. Labor Day holiday and then pick up again on Tuesday. Of course, who knows! [Photo: Gerald Ong]
