The setup is quite simple. You stand in an arena in different environments with something horrible that needs to be killed. You can move towards it, away from it, or strafe around it. There are no ranged weapons, so the only way to make a kill is to move in close.

Once there, you tap furiously to do as much damage as possible, but you also have to avoid the incoming damage which is considerable. Fortunately, the game allows you to block or roll away from incoming blows.

Every time you evade an enemy blow, you’re able to perform a slash attack which both hits the enemy hard and forces it to fly back and fall to the ground. You then have a few moments to rush back in and keep up the attack. You don’t have to use the slash attack immediately, but you can only store four at a time, so don’t leave them for too long.

The enemy’s health bar has to be brought down to zero more than once, and you’ll have to deal with various special attacks depending on what you’re fighting. You might have to deal with a tail suddenly lashing out at you or having the whole monster burrow under the ground and come up at your feet.

Completing levels allows you to earn achievements, find new items and craft new weapons using in-game currency. You also have items that can be used during a fight such as health potions and bombs.

Monster Hunter is action-packed with detailed 3D graphics and it's a great deal of fun to play. It’s designed for those who love hack and slash games; you’re even able to keep beating the broken corpse of your monster foe. Plus, there’s just enough depth of strategy to keep hold of you for some time.
