12 in 3 (Free) by Frank-Peter Poschmann is a utility app that can be used to help solve sudoku puzzles that have “cages.”

As many of us may be aware, Sudoku is usually a game of a 9x9 grid of cells grouped into smaller 3x3 grids, called nonets.

The aim is to fill all cells with a single number between one and nine in such a way that every row, column and nonet holds only one of the numbers from the specified range.

In some games of Sudoku, the cells will exist in even smaller groups, typically of two or three cells, which are denoted by a dotted line or being made a single color. These smaller groups are called cages, and will be accompanied by a small number.

The numbers you choose for the cells in a cage must add up to that small number. That’s where this app comes in.

It will allow you to specify the total sum required by the cage and the number of cells to be found in that cage. It will then display a list of combinations of digits between one and nine that give the required sum.

It will work for up to six cells in a cage.

If your Sudoku puzzle is partially filled and you happen to know that, for example, a two cannot be part of the answer, simply tap the number two on the keypad and it will exclude all combinations from the left that contain a two.

You can choose to exclude or include as many digits as you like.

The app serves a simple purpose well. If you often enjoy solving Sudoku puzzles with cages, you may find it very useful.
