You'll Want To Aim For The Head To Stay Alive In Deadly Zombies Attack

November 11, 2011

Deadly Zombies Attack (Free) by Jeannette Assaf is a first-person shooter (FPS) game that has you walking around seeking out zombies with relentless aggression. You can equip a large variety of weapons, but whatever you choose, you’ll have to aim it at their heads.

Not a lot is offered as far as a storyline goes. There’s a brief wall of text at the beginning, but beyond that you’re just left to fend for yourself. You’ll walk from one room to the next, running into zombies every few yards.

The frequency of zombies is well balanced. You never feel as though there are too many to deal with, but you’re never left bored either.

The controls are somewhat awkward and will take some getting used to. Aiming is done by tilt while moving forwards, backwards and strafing from side to side is accomplished using a small control stick on the left. A quick tap on the shoot button will fire off the weapon you’re holding. Keep an eye on your ammo. When it runs out, you’ll have to manually reload.

You start off with a simple pistol with an infinite amount of ammo and must earn in-game cash by killing zombies to purchase extra weapons. You’ll be able to choose from, among others, hand grenades, a shotgun and a rocket launcher. These weapons will also need their ammo to be purchased separately.

Naturally, this in-game cash can be bought with a real in-app purchase such as 1,000 cash for $0.99 or 1,000,000 for $18.99. The cash cost of the weapons is really high, and I don’t think they are worth it.

I have only two gripes about this game. First, you have to be careful to not let the zombies get too close or the pistol stops working. Make certain you have space to back up or you’ll get into trouble. Fortunately, you can access the store at any time and buy very cheap health packs any time you want (using in-game cash, of course).

Second, and most important, there is no save feature of any kind. The app plays like some kind of survival game, which doesn’t feel at all appropriate for this genre. It feels a bit frustrating to spend ages making progress only to lose it all because real life beckons.

Deadly Zombies Attack is a fairly well-crafted game, but asks for too many in-app purchases to be made. Its replay value would be a lot higher if it had a save feature. It’s a good thing this app is free.
