Meander Commander ($0.99) by Andrei Sava is a puzzle game that has you guiding a ball (by tilting your iDevice) through a maze filled with dead ends and dangerous cyber-brains (c-brains). This app offers a unique approach to this type of game by offering the ability to change the maze itself.

When the game starts, you’ll be shown just a small section of the level you’re playing on. To get a full view, press the bottom right button, so that you know where to go to collect power orbs, avoid the powerful c-brains and complete the level.

The c-brains are circular objects that should be avoided at all times and are made up of one of three colors: green, yellow or red. The colors represent levels of difficulty and will determine how dangerous a c-brain is. Green is the easiest and just moves around in a random fashion. Red is the most dangerous and will actively seek you out once it sees you. It will not stop until you block off the maze path behind you or complete the level.

The pink and blue power orbs increase your power levels, which allow you to perform one of three special moves. As you progress through the levels, you will unlock the ability to slide maze walls, remove wall sections to create new paths, and even jump over walls to effectively ignore them altogether.

You are under pressure to complete levels as quickly as possible since your power levels will gradually decrease over time.

Additionally, any level you play can be slightly modified at any time. A large green swirl will occasionally appear as a section of wall is closed off or opened up. This changes the solution from time to time, and you might even become trapped and will have to restart.

There are three difficulty levels for each of the two types of level design: classic and delta. In all, this constitutes six game modes. In classic mode, all levels have rectangular designs while in delta, levels are triangular.

The only serious flaw in this game is that choosing a new mode to play will reset all current progress. With 39 levels to enjoy, a reset of all progress is a very heavy penalty to pay for trying out something different or more challenging.

Meander Commander makes refreshing improvements to this type of game with its extra abilities, enemies and a sense of progression. It will be even better once it's possible to save your progress in all game modes.
