Jailbreak Only: iOS 5.0.1 Also Reportedly Untethered - Safe To Update?

December 12, 2011
In a recent Twitter update, iOS hacker and Chronic Dev-Team member @pod2g announced that iOS 5.0.1 has also been untethered, noting that it is safe for jailbreak fans to update to the current version of Apple's mobile operating system. The Twitter update read: Last week, @pod2g proved in a video demo that it was possible to untether an iOS device running iOS 5.0. However, at the time we were not sure whether the same exploit would be able to liberate iOS 5.0.1, also. Besides announcing the news via Twitter, @pod2g also updated his blog, writing:
It's late, time to pass out. I just want to let you know my iPhone 4 (iOS 5.0.1) is untethered. Some progress today heh ;-) Next : iPod 3G, iPod 4G, iPad 1. See ya.
The news means that iPhone 4 owners looking to jailbreak their handset once a solution is available can safely update to iOS 5.0.1. In the past, minor updates such as this have often been easily jailbroken - the larger, major updates, however, can prove to be problematic for iOS hackers. Furthermore, if you're planning on unlocking your iPhone (via a carrier unlock package like ultrasn0w), avoid updating altogether until the iPhone Dev-Team has given the go-ahead. We'll keep you posted on the status of the iOS 5 jailbreak. In the meantime, let us know if you're planning on jailbreaking under iOS 5 in the comments.
