Now It's Possible To Use An iPhone As A Remote Garage Door-Opener

January 16, 2012
LiftMaster - a company that already has a line of garage door-opening products available - has recently launched the LiftMaster Internet Gateway. This product (which has "brains AND brawn") allows customers to activate their garage door-opener from an iPhone handset. As outlined on the product's webpage:
The MyQ™ enabled LiftMaster Internet Gateway™ is your simple solution for home control. It utilizes two-way communication technology which allows you to connect to and control your garage door opener, gate operators, or home lights by using an Internet-enabled computer or mobile phone from anywhere in the world. And our two new garage door openers – the LiftMaster® Elite Series® 8550 and Premium Series 8360 with Battery Backup – are the only ones in the marketplace with MyQ™ technology built right in. This offers you a new level of home activation as opposed to an expensive, hardwired home automation system. Watch our video and read below to learn more.
After all, why would you activate your LiftMaster garage door-opener from a separate remote, when you can do it all using an iPhone handset? For one, the price-tag of these MyQ-enabled devices looks to be sizeable, with ZDNet reporting prices of $350-500. Furthermore, in order to activate the MyQ garage door-opener (which, in its defence, can also configure lights), a subscription of $15/year will have to be paid. The iPhone app, however, is free.
