Grade A Lessons In Pat LaFrieda's Big App For Meat
Pat LaFrieda's Big App for Meat ($6.99) by Zero Point Zero gives you an in-depth look at the world of meat. Hosted by the renowned butcher, Pat LaFrieda, this app includes video explanations and tutorials, an extensive meat guide, and even an interactive quiz.
LaFrieda’s training goes back to his great-grandfather, who received a black eye as a little boy from a fist fight. A local butcher put a steak over his eye and told the boy that he may have lost the fight, but at least he got a job.
Since then, every generation of LaFrieda has studied being a butcher, and it’s this heritage that LaFrieda shares within the app’s content.
You know your eyes are in for a treat the moment you see the app open with the LaFrieda logo set against a simulated piece of butcher paper.
A short intro video follows, which even further raises expectations. The moment the video starts, you’ll be amazed at the resolution.
This app is loaded with different features, such as a meat guide, techniques, and even a direct link to the LaFrieda shop. Over 200 different cuts of meat are shown, as well as over 50 minutes of quality video footage. You can even stream the videos through AirPlay to your Apple TV.
All of the pictures are in high-resolution, and are respectfully done. The developers took great care to show the meat without any of the gore, or anything that might be considered disturbing. Granted, vegetarians would still do well to stay away from this app.
No bones about it, the quiz (Meat 101) is hard! I would highly recommend fully exploring the app before attempting to get a passing score, especially if you sign into your Game Center account. Yes, you read that correctly -- a magazine app with Game Center support.
Whether you are interested in cooking a great steak, want to learn more about LaFrieda’s techniques, or are just curious about where different cuts come from, this app is for you.
The app is definitely on the high-end when it comes to price, but just like in buying meats, you have to pay more if you want the best cut.
