Readdle's PDF Expert For iPad Now Performs Deeper Searches, Allows Document Sorting, And More
January 25, 2012
Readdle's professional PDF document viewer, manager, annotator, and sharing application, PDF Expert, gains new features to improve finding your documents, protecting your data, entering information, and correcting annotations.
After launching PDF Expert, you're taken to the listing of all PDF documents maintained by the app. It's here that you'll find two of the new features. A flick downward on the documents list will reveal the new sorting panel conveniently hidden at the top. Once exposed, a single tap can re-sort all of the documents by name, date, or size. Tap on a sorting option a second time to toggle between ascending and descending order.
Above the list and sorting panel is the search field. While searching isn't new, scouring document content is. The first time you choose to search the contents of documents, PDF Expert will confirm authorization to index all of your PDF files stored by the app. If you decide you no longer want PDF Expert to index files, the feature can disabled in the settings options.
Moving along, the next couple of features deal with annotating. Foremost, Readdle has improved handwriting and wrist protection recognition, making it "much better than you can find in dedicated note taking apps." Added to your arsenal of tools, the eraser can help clean up and fix some accidental or reconsidered handwritten annotations. The eraser is available in three sizes and located at the right end of the pens toolbar.
With PDF Expert's remote access for document sharing and management, you may get concerned about privacy. Arriving in PDF Expert v3.2 to help alleviate that feeling is iOS Data Protection. When the option is enabled in the settings panel, the OS will encrypt all of your documents within PDF Expert after locking your iDevice. Readdle also mentions that you must be using the iOS passcode security feature for the option to work properly.
As a final note, entering information just got a bit easier. When using a Bluetooth keyboard and PDF Expert v3.2, you can now use the external keyboard's "tab" and arrow keys to move amongst and within form fields.
PDF Expert is compatible with iPad running iOS 4.0 or later, and available in the App Store for $9.99.
