Samsung Takes On iMessage: Launches ChatON, Its Own Messaging Service

January 7, 2012
Samsung has recently launched ChatON - a group messaging service that's already available for Bada and Android OS. The application supports the iPhone and iPod touch, and can be downloaded for free in the App Store. Eventually, ChatOn will also be available for BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone 7, allowing smart phone owners to chat with one another on-the-go for free, regardless of their mobile operating system. Though Apple's iMessage service (which launched in iOS 5) only supports iOS, a number of third-party applications are already available in the App Store, which are cross-platform and appear to work just as well. For example, WhatsApp Messenger - which has been available for a while now - is a cross-platform group messaging service, and supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS. However, WhatsApp does come with a $0.99 price-tag. Take a look at the free ChatON iPhone application in the App Store, and be sure to post your thoughts in the comments. [via Redmond Pie]
