The IMDb Movies And TV App Gets Expanded Sharing Support, More Alert Options, And Metacritic Data

January 25, 2012
The Internet Movie Database, otherwise much more commonly referred to as simply IMDb, is one of the most popular resources for movie and television show information. Launched in late 2009, the IMDb Movies & TV iOS app has slowly been improving to help fans access that wealth of information on the go. In the first update of 2012, IMDb Movies & TV v2.5 adds access to Metacritic data, more ways to share movie and show details, and an additional notification option. Even though IMDb has their own ratings and reviews system in place, the company has decided to add Metacritic reviews and ratings as a secondary opinion reference. The Metacritic data can be easily spotted within the "reviews and commentary" section of a selected movie or show by the red, yellow, or green square with the "Metasocre," the average rating for the given film, inside. Tapping on the Metascore displays a listing of the top critic reviews that can be read in full by tapping on an excerpt. Another feature to come along with IMDb Movies & TV v2.5 is the ability to easily share quotes, goofs, and trivia details for a movie or show. To share one of these details through SMS, email, Facebook, or Twitter, simply tap on the quote, goof description, or trivia entry bubble to bring up the sharing contextual menu. Unfortunately, it's still only a copy option when tapping celebrity details. Taking advantage of iOS 5's notification system, photo and event alerts are the third major addition to the IMDb Movies & TV iOS app. Managed within the "notifications" section of the settings area, turning on "featured photos" will alert you via a push notification whenever a new event and celebrity photos are added to the database. Further changes and additions to IMDb Movies & TV include: • Support for Amazon.cn (China) and Amazon.es (Spain) • Bug fixes IMDb Movies & TV is a universal app compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or later, and available in the App Store as a free download.
