New Code Unveils Unidentified iOS Chip - A6?

February 26, 2012
Another day, another rumor. That's how it is in the world of Apple, especially leading up to a purported device launch. While the Internet has been ablaze with iPad 3 rumors (you can see our rumor roundup here), this rumor involves all of our iOS devices. It seems as though references to a new, unidentified chip has been found deep in the iOS code. No, this isn't the A5X (S5L8945X) chip we told you about. This code refers to a new chip referred to as S5L8950X. The A5x is included in the same code. In the iOS code, the old A4 chip is called S5L8930X, whereas the A5 is called S5L8940X. Since the last two digits in the A5X's name are 45, and not 50, it's safe to conclude that the A5x may just be an upgraded A5 and not the quad-core processor we had hoped for. But what does this mean?

Honestly, it's anyone's guess. Is this supposed A6 chip for the iPad 3, while the A5x is for a new Apple TV? Will there be two new iPads launching next month? Was the A5X just a decoy? Heck, the A6 may not even be unveiled until the next generation iPhone is. Like all the other rumors circulating, we won't be able to know for sure until we get the real information from Apple. As always, we'll keep you posted. Until then, let's just say it's safe to mark  your calendars for March 7. (via 9to5Mac)
