SpellTower's Multiplayer Update Is Coming Along Nicely And Should Be Available Soon

February 21, 2012
SpellTower is one of those unique word games that's attractive to both newcomers and veterans of the genre. In fact, the game is holding a strong 4.5-star rating in the App Store in most regions. Released in November 2011 for iPad, SpellTower was converted into a universal app within a month. Further progress is quickly continuing as Zach Gage, the developer of SpellTower, recently shared a multiplayer demonstration video. In a tweet last Friday, Gage linked to a video posted on Vimeo that shows two people competing in local multiplayer with synchronous gameplay.

I'm guessing, this local multiplayer is using Bluetooth but could very possibly also be available through a shared Wi-Fi connection. Looking deeper, it appears that each word completion adds another letter block to the opponent's tower. In addition, you'll also notice a dark gray pattern on each player's screen. The dark gray pattern reflects the opponent's current letter tower configuration. I think, that's a really neat idea. To make the situation more exciting, Gage made another multiplayer-related tweet earlier today that would suggest the feature will be coming very soon, plus have an option to compete worldwide through Game Center matchmaking.
holy crap. apple *gives* you all the interfaces for starting/resuming an async multiplayer match? I might be able to bang this out in a day
Though not quite as exciting as the simultaneous play shown in the video, asynchronous, or otherwise referred to as turn-based, gameplay is much more common for online competition to prevent lag. Nevertheless, I'm going to say, great job Zach! Of course, none of this is finalized yet, and we need to wait for the update to be approved by Apple, but the effort and communication put forth by Zach Gage thus far is worth a pat on the back. We'll work to keep you apprised of the progress. Until then, learn more about the game by reading our SpellTower announcement post. SpellTower is a universal app compatible with iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running iOS 4.2 or later, and available in the App Store for $1.99.
