Apple Faces Another Class Action Lawsuit Over Siri's Functionality

March 30, 2012
Most people love their iPhone 4S. However, some users feel that Apple has falsified how much Siri is capable of. According to the Los Angeles Times, David Jones of California is one such user, and he is filing a class action lawsuit against Apple based on the way they market what Siri is able to do. This suit comes hot on the heels of a similar suit filed against Apple in New York. "Through its nationwide multimedia marketing campaign, Apple disseminates false and deceptive representations regarding the functionality of the Siri feature," the suit claims. "For example, in many of Apple's television commercials, consumers are shown using Siri to make appointments, find restaurants, and even to learn the guitar chords to classic rock songs. In its advertisements, Apple depicts these tasks as easily accomplished 'just by asking' Siri." The complaint claims that Apple is using "deceptive" marketing by showing people using Siri in a way that is not possible. Because this is a class action lawsuit, others will be able to jump in if they feel they were wronged by Apple and Siri. Whether you agree with the suit or not, it is hard not to argue that Apple has used Siri as a primary selling point for their latest iPhone. I could easily see how someone would be upset if they purchased an iPhone, only to find that it did not work as easily as advertised. One thing to keep in mind: Siri is still in beta. This could explain why some functionality is not working as well as users might like. That being said, Apple has not necessarily done the best job of making it clear to users who buy the device that Siri is not a final product. This suit seeks financial "relief and damages" for David Jones and others who have purchased an iPhone 4S. At this time, it is unknown what Apple has to say about the suit, and what they will do in response.
