Hacker From 'Anonymous' Boasts Cracking iCloud Account Of National Police Cybercrime Unit Head

March 6, 2012
Apple’s iCloud is a wonderful piece of technology, allowing users to be set free of the PC paradigm by providing their up-to-date information on any machine at any time. But it also has its downside. Today, ArsTechnica relayed the story of 19-year-old Irish citizen Donncha O'Cearrbhail, who was recently arrested by the FBI and Irish national police. He is suspected to be a hacker affiliated with the group known as "Anonymous," and the person who earlier this year infiltrated and recorded an international conference call between law enforcement regarding the group. The profile says that O'Cearrbhail was arrested last year for hacking, but police let him go. He promptly went out and did some iCloud hacking in early January. And it wasn’t the account of your average Joe Citizen. He boasted that he hacked into the iCloud account of a national police cybercrime unit head, and could see his contacts and track his location constantly. The only reason that we know of O'Cearrbhail’s claim is that the person he was talking to, only identified as “CW,” is apparently 28-year-old Hector Xavier Monsegur, aka Sabu. Monsegur is the suspected mastermind of Lulzec and Anonymous. He was quietly arrested in August and was turned into an FBI informant to help crackdown on the group of hackers. If O'Cearrbhail’s boast is true, it does show the dark side of the cloud, so to speak. And something we probably won’t see on Apple’s next commercial. While you can pull up your information on any device, hackers can too if your login information is compromised. Excuse me while I go change my password. (Image via ZDNet)
