Retina iPad Update For Climber Brothers Now Available, Sold Separately

March 31, 2012
Climber Brothers by Esquilax Games has been enhanced for the new iPad's Retina display. As the Climber Brothers themselves would say, "Yahoo!" Or knowing that although the game in which they star in did get upgraded with Retina graphics for the new iPad, the upgraded version turned out to be available as a new and separate app, would they be changing their minds and say "Boo!" instead? Owners of the new iPad who are expecting a free update for their existing copies of Climber Brothers are likely to say "Boo!" upon learning that the Retina update is available as a new and separate app costing $1.99. The app is called Climber Brothers HD, in reference to the new iPad's stunning HD screen, and the higher definition of image assets is actually the only thing that differentiates it from the non-Retina iPad version of Climber Brothers. Well, that and its price, which is a dollar higher than the price of the non-HD Climber Brothers, which also happens to be a universal app. By all accounts, the gameplay and content remain unchanged. Climber Brothers is a game about two retired climber brothers named Greg and Jeff. Upon learning of a hidden fortune in a castle up in the mountains, they set out to work closely together to climb and seek the treasure. Tied to each other at the hip, they advance in their perilous journey by alternately hooking themselves to the rock face until they reach the base destination in every level. Watch the gameplay trailer for Climber Brothers below. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. Truth be told, this sort of gameplay doesn't demand high-quality graphics as much as a first-person shooter, a hidden object game or a game about a flying psychedelic whale does. Nevertheless, an update to accommodate the new iPad's high resolution is always welcome for any app. But to release a much-awaited update for an app separately and charge a higher price for it is to crush the expectations, maybe even betray the trust, of that app's existing users — especially when they're already used to receiving free and native updates, even for other apps for which separately sold upgrades can be justified if need be. As mentioned, the Retina-ready Climber Brothers HD for iPad is available in the App Store for $1.99. The universal Climber Brothers, on the other hand, costs $0.99.
