Say So Long To Oink, The Ratings App
March 14, 2012
Oink, the ratings app, is calling it quits. On March 31, the service created by Internet guru Kevin Rose will end just five months after it debuted.
A posting on the Oink website today reads:
Howdy, We started Milk Inc. (the company behind Oink) to rapidly build and test out new ideas. Oink was our first test and, in preparing to move onto the next project, we’ve decided to shut it down to help focus our efforts. Thank you so much to everyone who joined and contributed to Oink. You have been the heart of Oink. We are extremely grateful for all of your effort finding and rating the best things in the places around you. We’ve discovered thousands of awesome pizzas, pastas, coffees, teas… and roller coasters, zoo exhibits, paintings, sculptures, vistas… and sodas, salads, sliders, soups… and so much more. So long and thanks for all the Oinks! More news from us soon, The Milk Team Download your Oink content We’re shutting down the Oink website on March 31st. To download all of your ratings and pictures, simply enter your username or email address associated with your account. If you don’t know your username, open the Oink app on your iPhone. Tap on your profile (bottom right), tap “Your activity”, and your username will be displayed in the bar at the top of the screen.First launched in November, Oink was developed by Rose’s startup lab, Milk Inc. The app offered a place for visitors to rate and rank things around them. For example, you want a good slice of pizza, so you go to your favorite pizzeria. Oink not only told you how good that pizza was compared to slices at other places in the area, but also let you know what the best dish was at your location. Rose founded Digg, Revision3, Pownce, and had been a production assistant and co-host on the now defunct TechTV. According to TechCrunch, Oink was downloaded 150,000 times by December. Oink is no longer available in the App Store, although current users can keep rating things through the end of the month. Are you sorry to see Oink go? Any suggestions for an alternative app to rank and rate things?
