See The World Like Never Before - In Full iPad Retina Display
March 17, 2012
Here's one more app to add to your folder of apps for showing off your brand new iPad to others. This one is geared towards impressing kids in particular, but that's not to say that grownups won't find anything in it to wow at. This app is the latest from Touch Press, an iOS publisher who has already achieved considerable success in bringing T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land to the iPad. It's called Barefoot World Atlas and it's based on last year's highly rated hardback atlas written by Nick Crane and illustrated by David Dean.
Barefoot World Atlas' main attraction is an interactive 3-D globe, filled with flags, landmarks and cultural touchstones. It lets you and your kids spin around and zoom in and out to explore the world's many wonders. It has loads of textual content written and narrated by Crane and animated illustrations handmade by Dean. It also has background music that changes in accordance with the type of music in the region being explored. And with various lists and directional arrows, the app lets you navigate easily through every nook and cranny of the world and see what's in store in every corner. Real-time country facts are available in the app courtesy of WolframAlpha, as well as 3-D rotations of historical objects from the Royal Geographical Society in London. Barefoot World Atlas is an ideal way to harness the awesome power of the new iPad's high-resolution Retina display, but it works quite well with old iPads, too. The app is available now in the App Store for $7.99. Fair warning, though: it's a hefty 1.56-gigabyte download. I'm pretty sure that's almost as heavy as the world itself.
